This is me

Updated: Jun 16, 2019

So…this is my first blog everyone. My name is Ashley. I’m a licensed psychologist, a Christian, a daughter, a soon to be wife, an auntie, a sister, a friend, and a constant learner. I also tend to be an overthinker and an overanalyzer, and, at times, need to get my thoughts out of my head. For years, I have completed this by writing in my diary. I’ve always been a private person, especially when it comes to my thoughts, feelings and opinions. While I will share this part of myself with those closest to me in my life, like my fiancé, my parents, my sisters, my best friends, I often close this part of me off to the rest of the world. Recently, a patient of mine blew my mind a little when he told me that I have helped him more than I could realize and that I should never stop sharing myself with others. I’m not sure if it’s a lack of self-confidence in my skills as a clinician, or I just doubt that I have many effective, life changing tips to share with others. Regardless, this prompted me to challenge myself in maybe opening myself up a little more to the world and instead of judging or doubting what I have but sharing what I do have to give.

My goal with this blog is to simply share my ideas on certain topics. My ideological framework comes from what makes me who I am. These ideas and thoughts will come from a collaboration of my training and experience as a psychologist, my values that were initially instilled in me by my parents when I was a child, the experiences that I have had growing up as an African American woman, and my spirituality and faith. I plan to post a different topic each Sunday that will get you thinking as we challenge our personal growth together. My hope is that these topics are factors that you deal with in your daily lives. Let’s learn and grow together as I embark on this new life experiment of blogging. We’ll see how this goes!

Join me next week to discuss "How to Manage Setbacks."

The ancient symbol of the Tree has been found to represent physical and spiritual nourishment, transformation and liberation.
